ISTPs and careers

ISTPs at work

People with ISTP preferences like careers that allow them to fill a “troubleshooter” or “problem solver” role. Flexible and resourceful, they often prefer to work autonomously, and they can easily provide lots of different services and work without a rigid structure. They may do best in positions where they can act as the expert that others call on when they need assistance.

ISTPs like to work on the immediate solutions to pressing problems. They tend to avoid jobs that involve brainstorming, conceptualizing, or long-range planning, as these tasks may feel like a waste of time to them. Their interest in how and why things work often makes people with ISTP preferences good candidates for jobs in technology, manufacturing, computer programming, technical support, and the emergency services.

Leadership style of ISTPs

Around 5% of global leaders have ISTP preferences. While ISTPs aren’t commonly drawn to leadership roles, they do enjoy leading others in fields they’re passionate about.

In leadership roles, people with ISTP preferences tend to remain calm, lead with strength and fairness, and offer no-nonsense solutions to problems. Under stress, however, they may become stubborn or critical.

ISTPs on a team

People with ISTP preferences don’t often like to work as part of a team unless there’s an important reason to do so. They may withdraw or become quiet during teamwork and team discussions. They prefer to hash out the details quickly and then set off on their own.

If they do need to work as part of a team, however, ISTPs tend to adapt to the societal norms of group working with respect and kindness.
